Hiking is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and get in touch with nature. Whether you're an experienced hiker or a novice, it's important to bring along some snacks to keep your energy levels up during your trek. And let’s face it, hiking is more fun while munching. Here are some of my favorite foods to bring with you on a hike.
- Trail Mix: Trail mix is a classic hiking snack that offers a good mix of protein and carbohydrates. A favorite is peanuts mixed with dried cranberries and dark chocolate chips.
- Energy Bars: Energy bars are a convenient and easy-to-pack snack that can provide a quick boost. Look for bars that are high in protein and low in sugar.
- Dried Fruit: Dried fruits like apples, mangos, and dates are a great source of natural sugars and carbohydrates. Plus, they're easy to pack and don't require any preparation.
- Jerky and Meat Sticks: Jerky and Meat Sticks are a great source of protein and can help keep you feeling full and satisfied during a long hike. I like the Archer Farms Mango Habanero Jerky and Chomps Beef Sticks in the Jalapeno or Beef flavor. Look for jerky that is free from preservatives.
- Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich: Man, you can’t get better than the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They are the perfect hiking snack because they taste even better when they get squished in your pack. They're also a great source of carbohydrates and protein.
- Tuna Sandwich: I know that this is not necessarily for everyone, but somehow the saltiness of the tuna combined with the crunch of the celery hits the spot. I wrap the sandwich in aluminum foil and put the sandwich in my pack against the ice that is in my water bladder. It keeps even on a warm day.
- Chocolate: Chocolate is a great source of energy and can help keep your mood elevated during a long hike. I specifically like dark chocolate peanut butter cups. I make them with collagen protein and they are the perfect treat. Look for chocolate that is high in cocoa content for the greatest health benefits.
Remember to pack plenty of water and stay hydrated during your hike. With the right snacks and plenty of water, you'll be able to enjoy your hike and stay energized throughout the day.
